As well known,ideological and political education plays an important role in schools. Especially in recent years, as the higher colleges develop rapidly, the size of its students is also growing. Our long-time ideological and political education education mode which take inculcation education as the leading has achieved remarkable results. However, in recent years, the traditional ideological and political education was more and more incompatible with its environment and the effectiveness of ideological and political education took a weakening tendency. There are various reasons for this phenomenon. The key is to adapt to the development of new conditions and new forms, reform and innovate to meet the needs of social development. This paper thinks that we should pay full attention the role that acculturation education plays in ideological and political education in the higher colleges. Taking illustration of the basic principles of cultivation theory as the starting point, this article revealed the special status of acculturation education in the field of contemporary ideological and political education by analyzing the development vein of acculturation theory and the comparison of acculturation education and similar concepts. Also, this paper further analyzed the characteristics of students and ideological and political work in higher colleges. Finally, this article explored how to enhance the acculturation education from the practical level.Acculturation theory experienced three stages: The first stage is the development period(1967-1978). An American scholar named Gerbner first proposed the acculturation theory in 1967. The theory study of this period has not described the mental activity process of acculturation effect clearly. The second stage is the challenge period(1978-1987). Since 1978, acculturation theory research enter the deepening and enriching stage. The third stage is the theory expansion period(1987-). Some subsequent acculturation researchers proposed several significant or contentious tropisms on Gerbner's opinion that only televisions had imperceptibly-influence acculturation effect and psychological mechanisms it generated.Acculturation education, recessive education, practice education and assimilation are related concepts that they have both relations and differences. This paper analyzed the acculturation education from their relations and differences and also analyzed the characteristics of ideological and political work. This paper emphasizes the significance of acculturation in ideological and political work in higher colleges. They are as follows: Acculturation education is a kind of scientific method in accord with objective law and advanced demand of current ideological and political work, a new mode according to the new characteristics of students in present higher colleges,a new approach to achieve meticulous and whole staff management,and a new way of enhancing the effectiveness of higher college students'ideological and political work. In a word, higher college students'ideological and political work should meet the needs of new situation and condition and explore new and better ways to enhance the effectiveness of ideological and political education. However, acculturation education is a new attempt. It is accord with objective law and advanced demand of current ideological and political work. So it will enhance the effectiveness of higher college students'ideological and political work.Finally, this paper analyzed the elements of acculturation education in higher college students'ideological and political work. There are mainly giving subject, information, campus culture, social environment, mass media and so on. These elements have different functions in acculturation education, but all have significance in thought forming of higher college students. Aiming at these elements, this paper explored the practical approaches of acculturation education in higher college students'ideological and political work. They are to comprehensively improve the quality of giving subject to emphasize the acculturation effect of giving subject, to optimize the information choice of higher college students'ideological and political work to emphasize the acculturation effect of education information, to create a good campus environment to concern the acculturation effect of campus environment, to educate students to set up correct philosophy and worldview to improve understanding the acculturation effect of social environment, and to guide students to know and look on mass media correctly to pay attention to the acculturation effect of mass media.
