Purpose: According to the existing high school English teaching syllabus, studentshave to meet the following requirements in attitude and affective education: 1. Takean active part in English social activities and form the habit of communication inEnglish. 2. Possess quite good ability of self-study and capability of assessinglearning effect and summarizing the effective learning methods. 3. Have strongcooperative awareness and be willing to cooperate with others to complete learningtasks. 4. Develop the awareness of intercultural communication, understand thedifferences of Chinese and foreign lifestyles and languages, respect foreign culturesand have national self-respect. Intercultural teaching has become an indispensablepart in foreign language teaching. Only by integrating English teaching andintercultural teaching can students stimulate their interest in learning English andcultivate their intercultural communicative competence. The thesis, based on thepresent situation of English teaching, is intended to discuss the feasibility ofintegration of language teaching and intercultural competence development. Itproposes some strategies of integrating English language teaching with interculturalteaching to raise students'intercultural awareness and cultivate their interculturalcompetence.Methodology: On the basis of the literature review, the thesis, with the students fromsenior one to senior three in a key high school in Shanghai as the subjects, introducesthe intercultural theories and combines them with the teaching of literary works,vocabulary, reading, audio-visual method, essay-writing and then designs fiveclassroom activities, integrating English language teaching and intercultural teachingin the classroom.Findings: After the classroom teaching, the students were asked to finish aquestionnaire in which ten questions about intercultural learning were listed. Theresults showed that students'interest in English and intercultural awareness weregreatly improved. It is obvious that students can score higher in English in collegeentrance exams through intercultural study. OriginalitOriginality: This is the first study to integrate English Language teaching withintercultural study in senior high school through classroom teaching, it is feasible todevelop students'intercultural competence.
