Recently, more and more attention has been paid to senior high school English teaching. There seems to be many factors which will greatly influence the students. For example, motivation has been extensively studied. Apart from that, the attribution theory is also a very important factor, because the ways of attribution, to a large extent, will affect students' motivation, emotion, and the expectations of their future success. This study adopts questionnaire and interviews to survey 123 students from Class 5 and Class 6, Grade one, Xinxiang No. 2 senior high school. This research is designed to get the results of their attribution tendencies of both success and failures. It aims to find out: 1) To what reasons do they tend to attribute their successes and failures? 2) What are the differences between successful students'attribution and unsuccessful students'attribution? Then, the research is going to find out the reasons for unsuccessful students'failure in English learning.According to the analysis of the results of the questionnaires and interviews, we can find the reasons which they attributed success and failure are different between the successful students and unsuccessful students. The successful students tend to attribute their success to internal factors such as ability, interest and effort, and attribute their failure to lack of effort or unlucky. As for unsuccessful students, they tend to attribute their failure to lack of ability, task difficultly and lack of interest and attribute their success to lucky. Therefore, English teacher should try to help them build their confidence and boost their interests, make them attribute in a positive way.In addition, this thesis is based on the majority of the subjects. We paid little attention to individual differences. In the real teaching, students are different, so teacher must pay more attention to different students. Another point is that during the process of attribution, teachers should learn to instruct students attribute in a correct way to improve the teaching efficiency.
