The secondary vocational education is an important part of education, and it undertakes the important task of cultivating millions of high-quality laborers. In the secondary vocational schools the students' cultural level is low and their English learning situation is far from satisfactory. The secondary vocational English teaching is still in the traditional model, which is dominated by teacher-centred approach. The latest western teaching mythodology—constructivism, with many unique opinions both in teaching and learning, has posed a challenge to the traditional teaching theory. This paper applies constructivism to the teaching of English in secondary vocational schools in the hope of changing the current situation. The paper is divided into five chapters: Chapter I is the introduction, which describes the topics the author studies, the outline of the paper and the research methods; Chapter II mainly elaborates the current teaching situation of English in secondary vocational schools. In order to get the access to the first-hand information, the author conducts questionnaire surveys and interviews and then analyzes the existing problems in both teaching and learning; Chapter III introduces constructivism, its learning theory, teaching modes and teaching methods; Chapter IV lists the basic principles about instructional design under constructivist teaching theory, and then applies them to the case studies; and Chapter V is the summary of the whole paper. The author draws the conclusion that a constructivist teaching approach is of great use to the teaching of English in secondary vocational schools. However, there still exist some problems for further research. Teachers should look at constructivism dialectically and assimilate its reasonable views so as to form the teaching methods that suit the English teaching in secondary vocational schools.
