With the revolution of English language teaching and the development of Communicative Competence Theory, Speech Act Theory and Systematic Functional Approach, linguists propose that the ultimate goal of English language teaching is to develop the learners'communicative competence. Hence the new curriculum criteria which are based on and guided by the Task-based Approach and Communicative Approach have come into being. Traditionally, grammar teaching has always been significant, but now different teaching pedagogies hold different attitudes and different explanations in terms of grammar teaching. Only after grammar teaching is treated scientifically, can it serve the goal of language teaching in a better way.From the situation of foreign language teaching in our country, English teaching is of main concern. English language teaching in senior high school plays an important role in the entire process of basic education, and it is the cohesion of basic education and higher education. The thesis is designed to investigate the current situation of English grammar teaching and learning. It is beneficial for the teachers to arrange their teaching materials and activities in a more reasonable way, which will lead to a better comprehension of the students.The research is based on the literature review on grammar teaching at home and abroad and the methodologies of it are questionnaire, interview and classroom observation. Two questionnaires are designed for both teachers and students, centering on the importance and aim of grammar teaching, their attitudes to grammar teaching, and the application of various teaching pedagogies and so on.The whole thesis consists of five parts. Chapter One is Introduction, which presents the significance and background of the study. Chapter Two is the literature review, covering the relevant concepts, contents of grammar, the studies of grammar teaching at home and abroad, and the effects of various teaching pedagogies towards grammar teaching in our country. Chapter Three illustrates the research questions, subjects, procedures and data collection. Chapter Four is the analysis and discussion of the data collected in the investigation. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the study.
