China's newly designed curriculum and pedagogy which are recently implemented in most of the primary and secondary schools initiatives seeking to enhance learners'interest and proficiency in foreign languages among school pupils. One of the key features in the new curriculum and pedagogy is to upgrade foreign language proficiency and to motivate continuation of foreign language study. This study reports one of the key factors, pupils'English learning motivation. The study analyses the nature of learner motivation and its relationship with gender, levels of proficiency, and thus provides evidence for possible measures to enhance pupils'foreign language learning motivation, and a baseline against which the success of the new curricular and pedagogical initiative can be measured in the future.In recent years, many educators, applied linguists and psychologists have emphasized the importance of foreign language (FL) learners'motivation in relation to learning outcomes. It is also widely accepted that FL learning motivation plays an important role in students'language learning. So many empirical studies have been done on students'FL learning motivation.From the perspective of social cognition, this study examined task value and achievement goal of students'English learning. A sample of 957 middle school students at key 2 and key 3 in this study.The main findings of this study are that there are differences in gender and grade among students'English learning motivation.
