Reading ability is one of the most important basic skills that language learners should master. We can say that the teaching of reading plays a crucial role in English teaching. However, it remains a weak point for Chinese language learners. In addition, the new curriculum and standard requires senior high school students to have a higher level of reading ability compared to previous requirement. Considering all these, how to improve senior high students'learning ability effectively is for us to study. On the other hand, through many class observations, the author found that English teachers seldom teach students strategies and skills for reading during class period. For one reason, the whole class is occupied by the language points which are for accumulating vocabulary and grammar drills. The freshmen are at a stage eager to learning new knowledge and meet high demands. Thus in daily learning process, if they have reading strategies to aid the learning, it would be much effective and easier. This thesis laid emphasis on the research on current situation of the strategy using. We sampled 100 students in one of the middle schools in Changchun to collect information about the current situation of their reading strategies. The result suggests that the freshmen are not frequently using those strategies; their exit correlations between the cognitive and met cognitive strategies are to some extend obvious. Further more, some suggestions about training reading strategies are provided.
