Reading ability is one of the most important basic skills that languagelearners should master. We can say that the teaching of reading plays a crucialrole in English teaching. However, it remains a weak point for Chineselanguage learners. In addition, the new curriculum and standard requiressenior high school students to have a higher level of reading ability comparedto previous requirement. Considering all these, how to improve senior highstudents ‘learning ability effectively is important for us to study. On the otherhand, through many class observations, the author found that English teachersseldom teach students strategies and skills for reading during class period. Forone reason, the whole class is occupied by the language points which are foraccumulating vocabulary and grammar teaching. The freshmen are at a stageeager to learning new knowledge and meet high demands. Thus in dailylearning process, if they have reading strategies to aid the learning, it wouldbe much more effective and easier. This thesis laid emphasis on the researchon current situation of the strategy using. We sampled1280students in one ofthe middle schools in Ordos city,who belong to three levels of classes, whichare ordinary classes, average classes and the best classes, in total there are20classes to collect information about the current situation of their readingstrategies. The result suggests that the freshmen are not frequently using thosestrategies; Furthermore, some suggestions about training reading strategies areprovided.
