Research On The Camblimg Of Fan-tan From The Interpersonal Perspective

The gambling of fan-tan is a representative phenomenon about gambling on rural areas in China's southeast coast, which prevailed again under the influence of social market-oriented. This paper argues that the gambling of fan-tan has became a cultural fact and embed itself deeply into the structure of life course to some groups, the fact of the gambling of fan-tan produces an effect on the individual's verbal, physical and temperament, or power, communication methods and symbolic organization symbol. It can be said that, fan-tan as an objective social fact not only associates with structure and history in some rural communities from the macro level, but also become an indispensable symbol in a particular community from the micro level, or key node in the interactive ritual chain for Collins'words.The village named Mencun in the southern of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is the base for carrying out my fieldwork, my research takes Randall Collins' interaction ritual theory as a guide, which explains the significance of fan-tan to the villagers'life in the Mencun. This paper depicts the dealers identify themselves, choosing shareholders, gamblers work together, dealers lend money for gambling, people exchange information and the performance of minors, all these everyday situations show that people communicate with each other through interactive symbolic. It looks like conducting an interaction ritual when villagers gathered together to join the gambling of fan-tan, at which time an emotional energy was produced. The casino of fan-tan runs successfully rely on the trust which was leaded by the main organizers, attitudes from the villagers who don't join the gambling, the performance when villagers versus polices and the disharmonies comes from the gambling of fan-tan when villagers indulge in it, all these reflected the social life in the village.The gambling of fan-tan is as if an interaction ritual, whose rationality of existence was product by meeting social needing from individuals more and more. One of the reasons the gambling of fan-tan exists is because that people need to communicate with each other and it occurs to the social relations, meanwhile, the theory of interaction ritual also shows that economic factors should not be though as the largest reason for people's gambling behavior. Activities in the context of fan-tan, such as the villagers interact with each other face-to-face, limit outsiders, gather attention and share emotional experiences, they promote the social solidarity to be achieved in the ceremony of being present. It's also the possible explanation for the society of China's village still keep moving after the appearance of plight named "die out" under the influence of market-oriented. The article says that social shaping force would be produced again through internal culture to a certain extent, which promotes the society to look for solidarity ties, thus the social re-unity come true ultimately.
