Modernization is a great goal that all the countries around the worldkeep on pursuing, and agricultural modernization is an important part ofthe whole modernization. Mao Zedong is the opener of Chineseagricultural modernization. In China, studying the thought ofagricultural modernization should start from that of Mao Zedong's. Thesystematic study of Mao Zedong's agricultural modernization thoughtcan not only widen and deepen the research field of Mao Zedong'sthought, but also help to understand the development history of modernChinese agriculture and broaden insight of Chinese characteristicagricultural modernization.The revolution in science and technology in the developedcapitalistic countries, the development trend of agriculturalmodernization and the agricultural backwardness in China are theinternational and domestic backgrounds of Mao Zedong's agriculturalmodernization thought. The cognition of agriculture in semicolonial andsemifeuda society and the working experience in agricultureaccumulated in the long-term Chinese revolution based on countrysideare the bud and base of Mao Zedong's agricultural modernizationthought. And the classical arguments about agriculture from Marx, Engels and Lenin are its theoretical guidelines. The model of SovietUnion's agricultural modernization and its experience and lessonsprovide the reference. The socialist reformation of agriculture and thepreliminary exploration to socialist modernization are its practicalfoundation.Mao Zedong's agricultural modernization thought undergoes threehistorical periods from embryo to maturity: new democratic revolution,socialist revolution and initial stage of socialist construction. And itcovers every aspect of agricultural modernization. This paper discussesand analyses from four points. The first chapter probes the researchstatus on Mao Zedong's agricultural modernization in academia. Theauthor also defines several important concepts in this paper. The secondchapter analyzes the origin and development of Mao Zedong'sagricultural modernization thought. The third chapter explores the maincontents of Mao Zedong's agricultural modernization thought during theperiod between the founding of People'Republic of China and the eveof culture revolution, including the reconstruction of rural social regimeand structure based on land reform, the importance of agriculture, thethought of collectivization first and then mechanization, technology onagriculture, and farmer modernization etc., among which the mostimportant part is the choice of agricultural modernization road. Thefourth chapter summarizes the shortages of Mao Zedong's agricultural modernization thought, and whose positive significance andenlightenment on agricultural modernization with ChinesecharacteristicsAccording to Mao Zedong, agricultural modernization is a long andhard process, and Chinese agricultural modernization must adhere to thesocialist orientation. The interests of farmers should be put at the firstplace when dealing with"Three Rural Issues", and all these provideprofound enlightenment for agricultural modernization with Chinesecharacteristics.
