Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) is a novel wastewater treatment techniquereceived wide attention, has the advantages of small a area, high processing efficiency,easy to operate and so on, will be an effective method which overcomes difficulties inwater treatment engineering. Improve the core-filter performance, to a certain extent,accelerate biological aerated filter in our country development application. As astarting point, with a view of studying new unburned activated carbon ceramic filterfor improving the efficiency, this paper includes filter’s develop, functional test,application tests in sewage treatment, the important things are the develop andapplication.The unburned activated carbon ceramic filter is made by blending activatedregeneration of activated carbon, cement, an appropriate amount of admixture andwater to sphere. The best formulation drawn by orthogonal experiment is45.2%ofregeneration of activated carbon,43.2%of cement,8.1%of lightweight materials,2%of plaster,1.5%water glass, and every100g material join40ml water.After testing effectively, the filter has17.84m~2/g of surface area,3.34timesmore than the general,3.86Mpa of compressive strength,0.62g/cm3of bulk density,20%water absorption,62.8%of porosity.The homemade activated carbon ceramic and ordinary ceramic are appliedrespectively in BAF, and compared by treating sewage. During biofilm stage, biofilmcolonization of the two kinds of ceramic filter are successful in the8thday, andactivated carbon ceramic can be detected that:78%of CODcrremoval rate,0.242mmof biofilm thickness,80%of turbidity removal rate, the ordinary ceramic:60%,0.218mm, and70%respectively. During the daily running, the CODcrremoval rate andturbidity removal rate are both high, the former can reach89%of CODcrremoval rate,90%of turbidity removal rate, the latter can reach81%and85%at most; the removalof BOD5and SS is also well, and can reach over90%and85%respectively, however,ammonia removal efficiency is low. Sampling along different height of the the filterlayer and detecting, the results indicate that: CODcrremoval rate increases with the height of the filter layer increases, it grows fastest at the height of0~400mm, it canreach61.2%(activated carbon ceramic) and48.5%(ordinary ceramic. In the15th day,the filter is carried air-water back flush, first, air scour alone, then, air-water backwash,at last, water scour. After blackwash, hydraulic condition returns to steady, evenhigher than the maximum of processing capacity.Experiments confirm that the major factors, which affect the quality of activatedcarbon ceramic, are dosage of cement and activated carbon, then the dosage oflightweight materials. The application of BAF water treatment proves that, activatedcarbon ceramic is superior to the ordinary and is an appropriate ceramic for BAF. Thatthe homemade unburned ceramic is made by regeneration of activated carbon andcement rather than by clay, to waste activated carbon regeneration as raw materials toachieve the purpose of treating waste by waste,saves land resource and energy, reducethe environmental pollution, accords with our country in advocating the energy savingand emission reduction.Its widespread use will speed up the development of ourcountry’s water treatment industry.
