In this paper, the progresses in research on wet strength agent and styrene-acrylic emulsion modified were reviewed. The styrene-acrylic emulsion modified by carboxyl and epoxy was prepared by core-shell emulsion polymerization process. Its application conditions and effects as a wet strength agent were studied.The results are as follows:(1) The processes recipes of carboxylic carboxyl modified styrene-acrylic emulsion were:the ratio of anionic emulsifier sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic emulsifier alkylphenol ethoxylates (OP-10) was1/2, and the content of compound emulsifier was5.0%; the amount of initiator potassium persulfate (KPS) in core reaction was0.15g, and in shell reaction was0.1g; the content of functional monomer methacrylic acid (a-MAA) was7.5g.(2) The conditions of epoxy modified styrene-acrylic emulsion were:the dosage of cationic emulsifier cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (1631) was2g; the content of initiator (KPS) was0.2g;10g functional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was average assigned to nuclear layer and shell.(3) APSBMA alone used, the effect was not good. The dosage of CPSEG must be greater than6.0%to achieve effect as wet-strength agent and the enhancement of CPSEG increased with the curing temperature rising. Added small amount of DMP-30could effectively reduce the amount of CPSEG. With1.5%DMP-30(relative CPSEG) and3.0%CPSEG at the same time application, the wet strength of the handsheets with separate added12%of the CPSEG quite, reached28.4%.(4) APSBMA and PAE compounded had a good performance. When0.3%of APSBMA and0.7%of PAE were compounded, the wet strength of the handsheets could be up to38%, increased by50% than the handsheets which individually added1.0%of PAE, and the folding endurance increased1.5times.
