Wenruitang River, the "mother river" called by people of Wenzhou, is a tidal plain river network with the largest drainage area in Wenzhou and comprehensive functions including farmland irrigation, flood control, water supply, aquaculture and landscape tourism, etc. Since the reforming and opening-up, Wenzhou witnessed rapid development in economy and urban construction. Meanwhile, Wenruitang River became one of the major pollutants receptor, causing many water environmental problems like water and sediment pollution, sludge deposition, river network fragmentation, ecosystem degradation and landscape deterioration. These problems severely restricted Wenzhou’s sustainable economic development and impeded the improvement of local residents’quality of life.Wenruitang River network and its basin pollution can be a typical representative in eastern coastal areas of China. Based on information collecting from literatures, field investigation and questionaires, this thesis tried to analyze the causes and impact factors of water pollution in Wenruitang River basin, and to discuss control countermeasures from multi-perspectives of physical geography, social economy, and municiple infrastructure construction. In the aspect of physical geography, Wenruitang River basin belongs to soft river-sea sedimentary base. The drainage pipe networks in this basin are not only hard and expensive to build but also apt to subside, disjoin and broke. The hydrodynamic force of Wenruitang River is naturally weak and artificially imbalance. Currently, the ecosystem functions of Wenruitang River network have been almost ruined completely. In the aspect of social economy, private economy accounts for81.6%of the GDP of Wenzhou. Wenzhou is most concentrated with small and medium enterprises, which are hard to supervise due to scattered distribution and common phenomena of discharging untreated wastewater directly and secretly to Wenruitang River. The secondary industry is the dominated industry in Wenzhou with a proportion of52.4%, which is heavily resource consuming and greatly pollutants discharging. In the aspect of municiple infrastructure construction, the rate of treated wastewater is less than70.0%within the basin. The municiple infrastructure constructions are far lagging behind the development of the city, exhibiting in the poor capability of sewage intercepting, intaking and treating. In addition, the funding on environmental protection is not enough for Wenzhou and even belowing the national average level. There still remain many urban villages within Wenruitang River basin. River channels near urban villages are always heavily polluted and extremly hard to control, which intensively indicates various factors to the formation of the river pollution. Through field investigations of municiple infrastructures and residents’ environmental consciousness, the thesis explains the relationship among the economy status of urban villages, life-style of local residents and water pollution of Wenruitang River basin. Finally, taking interrelationship and feasibility of all control measures into consideration based on the cause analysis and practical experience and lessons for urban water environment protection at home and abroad, the thesis puts forward some control measures to solve the major water environmental problems of Wenruitang River at this stage. Firstly, optimizing the industry structure and transforming the mode of economic development. Secondly, innovating the institution and strengthening integrated management. Thirdly, increasing the investment in environmental protection and promoting the construction of municiple infrastructures. Fourthly, expanding publicity in order to improve the environmental consciousness of enterprises and the public. Fifth, cutting pollution, treating wastewater and reinforcing ecological restoration of Wenruitang River basin. In a whole, this research aims to provide fundamental information and policy reference for urban river pollution control in eastern coastal area of China.
