Since the birth of ceramic cutting tools, a lot of try and researches on cuttingperformance and cutting data of different ceramic cutting tools at home and abroad havebeen made and parts of the ceramic cutting tools have been successfully used inproduction practice. However, with the growing development of social production, theproduction equipment being constantly updated and engineering material being rapidlydeveloped, the current researches of the ceramic cutting tools are not sufficient.Through the study of literatures on ceramic cutting tools’ machinability, combining withthe existing research conditions, this paper makes a research on the cutting performanceof Al2O3ceramic cutting tools in continuously turning of45steel and cast iron.In this experiment, continuous dry cutting was adopted in manufacturing excircles. Before and after the test we use digital cameras、a tools microscope and scanningelectron microscope to take pictures of tool face and cutting scrap, observe the tool wearmorphology, study the wear mechanism of ceramic cutting tools in turning of cast ironand45steel; record the length and morphology of cutting scrap, turn45steel and castiron respectively in different cutting speed and cutting depth in order to get the wearcurve of cutting tool face in turning of45steel and cast iron; provide the reference ofselection of cutting parameter in turning cast iron and45steel.1. When cut45steel continuously, ceramics tools have obvious advantages.Thetool wear pattern is given priority to crescent wear of rake face and boundary wear. When cutting speed increases, crescent wear and boundary wear are intensified, andbinding phenomenon becomes more serious. The mechanisms of wear are adhesionwear and abrasive wear. Besides wear, damage phenomenon such as exfoliation andcataclasm happen during the cutting process.2. When cut cast iron continuously, with the increasing of cutting speed, cuttingtool wear intensifies, and the tool’ life is shortened. Moreover, the main failure mode isadhesion wear. At a lower cutting speed, the main tool wear patterns are crescent wearof rake face and boundary wear with a slight micro tipping. With the increasing speed ofcutting, tipping and adhesion wear become the main failure modes.
