To accelerate the cutting heat dissipation is an important issue in high speed machining process. The fluid cooling method used in traditional cutting process is not only costly, but also have very negative effect on the ecological environment and health of worker. In recent years, exploration about heat pipe cutter was carried out, these studies have proved that the cutting heat can be effectively dissipated, thus the cutting temperature and the thermal expansion of the tool can be reduced by using the heat pipe technology. Based on the previous research for heat pipe tools, This study aims to find a balance between cool effect and milling stability, and focuse on the milling temperature, the dynamic and stability characteristics of spindle and tool system with the method of theoretical analysis and finite element simulation.The mathematic model of cutting temperature field for heat pipe end mill has been built. With the heat source method, the temperature field due to shear plane source and the tool-chip interface friction source is converted to the problem of temperature of moving linear source.Two variables are defined:one is the ratio of heat pipe diameter and tool diameter, another is the ratio of distance from the tool tip to the heat pipe and tool length. The finite element model of the heat pipe is simplified, the effect on the temperature field by variables is analyzed.The dynamic model is established, dynamic characteristics of heat pipe end mill for different diameter ratio and length ratio are obtained by finite element simulation. With the establishment of finite element model of the heat pipe end mill and spindle system, the influence of diameter ratio and length ratio to the dynamics is analyzed. Based on two-dimensional stability limit diagram, the stability prediction of the heat pipe end mill and spindle system is given.According to the analysis results of the temperature, dynamics peculiarity and stability, the design principle of heat pipe end mill is proposed in combined consideration of the cooling performance, milling stability, practical application, promotion and economy characteristic.
