The rapid development of high-speed machining, cutting in order to achieve ahigher quality of the higher efficiency of the workpiece, not only have higherrequirements for machine tools, but also the need for more high-performance toolmaterials. Ceramic cutting tools for its excellent cutting performance and cost-effective,particularly suitable for high-speed finishing and processing of metallic materialsdifficult to cut, the more obvious advantages, has become the cutting especially themost important high speed cutting tool material. It can simplify the process, improvelabor efficiency, and durability relative carbide is several times higher, even a few times,good economic returns. It is predicted that the coming period, the proportion of ceramiccutting tools in machining tool will increase to15%to20%.Ceramic cutting tools generally brittle, poor toughness, limiting the promotion ofthe use. So how to improve the toughness of ceramic cutting tools to reduce itsbrittleness has become the main content of the contemporary ceramic tool. Ceramic toolmaterial composition is increasingly diversified gradually from high-purity,single-phase to the development of multiphase composite ceramic materials more andmore small grain, from micron to nano-scale development, more and more use ofcomputer-aided design. The basic purpose is to solve the Toughening of ceramic cuttingtools, and chipping problems. The only effective solution to the brittleness of ceramiccutting tools and research results promptly application to the actual production in orderto better play the advantages of ceramic tool. To overcome this problem, the researchersused the experimental conditions and equipment, to study the wear pattern and wearmechanisms, and by optimizing the components of the material, to improve thepreparation process of the tool, multi-phase multi-level complex, a variety of combiningmeasures to effectively reduce the brittleness of ceramic materials.Of ZrO2(content of85vol%) as the matrix, adding of TiB2(content of8vol%) andAl2O3(content of7vol%) in the hot pressing process under the conditions of ZrO2basednanocomposites ceramic tool materials, developed, and its hardness flexural strength for13.59GPa for10.55GPa fracture toughness10.57MPa·m1/2, and cutting tool made useof this material on the ordinary45steel and LY12, to study the cutting performance offriction and wear mechanism. The cutting test resuluts show that the development ofZrO2based nanocomposites ceramic tool when cutting45steel and LY12,cutting performance is good,the main wear mechanism is adhesive wear and abraisive wear.
