Recently, large amount of glycerol as a by-product were produced for the bio-dieselproduction was continuously increasing. Glycerol carbonate(GC) is one of the promisingvalue-added glycerol derivatives due to its potential and widely used in various fields, thesynthesis of glycerol carbonate was mostly studied in China and abroad.Dimethyl carbonate, which is a new-style environmental protection material, attractsbroad attention from the academic world at home and abroad. CaO is a compound with lowcost and can be developed as a promising catalyst for glycerol and dimethyl carbonateproducing glycerol carbonate. It has great importance to construct development of society.Firstly, the kinetics for synthesis of glycerol carbonate was investigated with Dimethylcarbonate and glycerol over CaO catalyst. Reaction optimization study has been carried outleading to operate on conditions for achieving a high conversion and yield: Dimethylcarbonate/glycerol molar ratio:3.58, particle size of CaO:100mesh, calcined temperature:1073K, stirring rate:1500rpm. The numerical prediction was obtained and compared withthe experimental data. The result has shown a good agreement between them.Reactive distillation and extractive distillation carried out in different column wasfurther researched in the following section of this work. The effects of the operationparameters (Dimethyl carbonate/glycerol molar ratio, reflux ratio, final temperature oftower bottom, and CaO loading) on the reactive distillation process were investigated bythe systematical experiments. Under the conditions of the Dimethyl carbonate/glycerolmolar ratio of4, reflux ratio of1, final temperature of tower bottom of358K, CaO/glycerolmolar ratio of0.05and tower height:400mm, the glycerol conversion and GC yield reachedas high as99%, respectively, and the concentration of calcium in the product was less0.08wt.%. Seeking a suitable extractant is a key problem, among these extractants, theextraction effect of the toluene is the best.
