With the development of science and technology, global competition gradually increases.If we want our country’s machinery manufacturing industry to be good in the world market competitiveness and get large profits, we must continue to reduce processing costs. And improving processing efficiency is the most effective way to reduce the processing cost. Tool is an important component,and processing efficiency good or bad depends on its performance. Therefore, the manufacture of tools and the study of its performance are never-ending tasks in the industry.We first studied to use multi-arc ion plating manufacture tool coated TiN on the substrate of cemented carbide YT15.We controlled the process parameters such as arc current, substrate negative bias on the amplitude,nitrogen and argon flow ratio and so on.We studied the variation of TiN coating on phase, surface morphology, chemical composition, thickness and hardness under different process parameters.We also analysed the relationship between them and determine the optimal process parameters. And then we controlled the process parameters,such as argon nitrogen flow ratio, deposition time, substrate bias voltage duty cycle and so on, to manufactury the ZrN coated tools and do the same analysis.At the last we determine the optimal process parameters to manufactury the TiN coated tools as followed: substrate bias voltage amplitude was200V, nitrogen and argon flow ratio was1:1.4and deposition time was60min. The optimal process parameters to manufactury the ZrN coated tools are as followed:nitrogen and argon flow ratio was1:1.4, deposition time was60min and the substrate bias voltage duty cycle wad50%. The results showed that:TiN and ZrN coating and its properties have great similarities and differences. This is due to Ti and Zr belong to the same clan but different melting point and evaporation heat. TiN coating showed only a strong (111) crystal plane preferred orientation, ZrN coated crystal plane orientation is not only evident in the (111),but also in the (100).(111) crystal orientation, the more obvious the better surface quality, the closer of chemical composition, the better the performance of coating.So the ZrN coating,s quality was better than the TiN coating’s.In this paper,we have studied two ways to manufacture composite coating,and we have prepared the ZrN/TiN multi-layer composite coating and TiZrN multi-element coating. The results showed that:composite coating is better than the single layer, multi-element composite coating is better than the multi-layer coating.We also studied the cutting performance of the tools coated YG8, ZrN, ZrN/TiN and TiZrN in this paper. We have compared the amount of tool wear under the same cutting conditions, the results is:TiZrN coating>ZrN/TiN coating>ZrN coating>TiN coating.
