In order to improve the mechanical properties and energy performances of gun propellant, TEGN propellant were modified by adding RDX, NQ, TPUE on the basic formula.The influences of some components on the energy performance of the propellant were discussed and the series of propellant formulas were determined by the theory calculation and analysis of the energy indication parameters. Relevant propellant samples were prepared, the combustion and mechanical properties of the modified TEGN propellants were respectively studied by the closed vessel, compression strength test and impact strength test in different temperature.Theoretical calculation results show that the deflagration temperature can be decreased with the addition of RDX and NQ when the energy level of propellants keeps no change, while the energy of propellant would reduced by adding TPUE. Therefore, a certain amount of RDX, NQ and a small amount of TPUE are added into the basic formula so as to improve both the propellant force and the mechanical performance of the propellant and at the same time reduce the deflagration temperature to a certain extent.Experimental results show that pressure exponent is increased by adding RDX and NQ had opposite effect. With the increase of TPUE content, the pressure exponent is increased slightly and the impact strength is increased gradually. The compression strength of the modified TEGN propellants at low temperature is higher than that in the normal atmospheric temperature, while the influence of temperature on the impact strength is on the contrary.An optimum formulation of modified TEGN propellant is determined, and the content of components are as follows:TEGN5%, NG15%, NC49%, RDX30%, C21%, TPUE3%. The propellant prepared by this formula has a best strength as well as has a higher propellant force and lower deflagration temperature. Its propellant force is1172.4kJ/kg, and the deflagration temperature is3310K as calculated.The impact strength at low temperature is17kJ/m2.
