Special machining technology is used for processing parts with energy which is differentfrom traditional cutting method, and it has many advantages such as non-contact andprocessing heterotypic cavity, so it has been developed rapidly in recent20years. The level ofdevelopment of special machining is one of the signs of a development of manufacturingscience and technology. EDM and laser processing are used in engineering fields more andmore widely and has gain universal attentions of domestic and foreign researchers.So far, the research on EDM and laser processing is focused on the development of themachine and product applications. However, the study of basic theories is still lagging behind.Morphology characteristics and function characteristics of EDM and laser processing surfaceare very different from the ones of the traditional cutting processing’s lines surface. Theoriginal understanding and theory are not suitable for special processing surface, and this kindof situation has seriously restricted the special processing technology’s further development.EDM and laser processing surface morphology characteristics should be researched deeply inorder to evaluate and sum them up in general rules. In this way, an effective measure for theuse performance of special processing parts can be provided, and the quality of the specialprocessing may be improved, and preparations will be made for working out the scientific andreasonable evaluation system of the surface roughness parameters and the effective testmethod. At the same time, theory basis of choosing device or processing methods should beprovided, so that our country’s special processing technology level can be enhanced. Themeasures have important academic value and strategic significance, and remarkable economicbenefits and social benefits will be gained from them.In this paper, firstly, principle and mechanism of EDM and laser processing are analyzedand compared. According to the characteristics of special processing, uniform design methodis used for the design and processing of the specimens. There is no impact on the research ofprocessing law, and it greatly reduces the workload of the test. At the same time, ensuring thecomprehensive test, it makes the results more general. Sceondly, SEM and metallographicmicroscope are used to watch the processing surface of EDM and laser cutting. Not onlysurface indentation, convex peak and their distribution rule, but also metallographiccharacteristics are summed up. The results provide theory basis for the following function research and establishing a scientific and reasonable evaluation system.Thirdly, through the verification of numerical simulation and actual processing measure,mathematical model of isotropic surface morphology is built. Morphology characteristics andgeometry condition of special processing is iconically reflected. The quantitative relationshipbetween microscopic structure size and the surface assessing parameters is deduced.According to the similarities of morphology characteristics of EDM and laser cutting, thethree-dimensional evaluation system of the surface roughness parameters is built up. Finally,the test and analysis of functional perfomance of the two kinds of special processing surfaceare finished, according to microhardness and surface stress. The changed trend of microhardness according to metamorphic layer depth is obtained, and the phenomenon of surfacestress and surface crack are analyzed. The results provide scientific evaluation standard andstrong theoretical support.
