Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS)resin is a thermoplastic engineering plastic composed of styrene acrylonitrile copolymer(SAN)as a continuous phase and polybutadiene(PB)rubber particles as a dispersed phase. It is widely used in various fields of human life due to its excellent comprehensive performance. The core technology of the emulsion grafting-bulk SAN blending method, which is the most important production process for the production of ABS resin, lies in the synthesis of large particle size polybutadiene latex(PBL),and polymer agglomeration method is an efficient agglomerate method for the synthesis of PBL.Until now,the production process of ABS resins by polymer agglomeration method has not been mature enough and only a few foreign manufacturers have the technical data to use it for industrial production. Therefore, the development of polymer agglomeration method process is of vital importance to break the monopoly of production technology and improve the quality of ABS resin. In this paper,a series of polymer agglomeration agents with different adhesion effects were synthesized by semi-continuous feeding method using stepwise emulsion polymerization, and the effects of different variables on the structure and function of the adhesion agents were investigated by regulating the amount of hydrophilic monomer methacrylic acid(MAA),the ratio of monomers in the semi-continuous feeding process and the amount of chain transfer agent tert-dodecyl mercaptan(TDDM).The effect of different variables on the synthesis process was investigated. The effects of the four PBL preparation processes on the latex state and stability of large particle size PBL were also evaluated and compared to illustrate the advantages of the polymer agglomeration method for the preparation of PBL.The results show that when polymeric adhesives are synthesized with a monomer dosage ratio of 6/4 to 5/5,MAA dosage of 14 wt%to 18 wt%and TDDM addition of 0.2 wt%to 0.4 wt%,not only do they ensure a stable emulsion polymerization process, but they also achieve a dry base addition of 3 wt%to 4 wt%of adhesives. The best adhesion effect of the adhesives is achieved at a dry base addition of between 3 wt%and 4 wt%,resulting in PBL with a particle size above 300 nm,a narrow distribution and a good emulsion state.Based on the emulsion grafting-bulk SAN blending process, styrene(St)and acrylonitrile(AN)were successfully grafted onto the agglomerated PBL latex particles through emulsion grafting polymerization, and melt blend the obtained ABS high adhesive powder with SAN resin, ultimately preparing a series of ABS resins with good mechanical properties, apparent properties, and processing properties.During this period, the effects of the rubber particle size, rubber to monomer feeding ratio, the amount of ABS polymer powder and grafting or blending conditions on the properties and structure of ABS resins were systematically investigated, the optimum process conditions for the preparation of ABS resins by polymer agglomeration method were analyzed and summarized, and the feasibility of substitution between different PBL preparation processes in the production of ABS resins was verified. The results show that the FT-IR analysis identifies a good bond between the attachment agent and the rubber particles.Because of the existence of the agglomeration agent in the rubber particles, the Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene prepared by the polymer agglomeration method will have unique advantages and phenomena, such as the best feeding ratio of rubber to monomer is closer to 65/35,the oxidation induction time of ABS high glue powder is extended to more than 35 minutes, the whiteness value of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is generally higher than 55%,and the glass transition temperature(T_g)of rubber phase will slightly shift to the high temperature zone.In terms of mechanical properties, when the particle size of agglomerated rubber reaches more than300 nm and the addition amount exceeds 13 wt%,the prepared polymer agglomerated Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene has good impact toughness. In a nutshell, this paper has a certain guiding role for the industrial development of the production technology of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene by polymer agglomeration.
