The advantages of both traditional oil-based ballpoint pens and water-based ballpoint pens were combined on the gel ink pen. The advantages of Gel ink pen are smooth writing, simple structure, water resistance, light fastness, clear writing, save for a long time and so on. It has been a innovative writing tool and very popular in the world. Output and export volume of the gel ink pen in China have been ranking top-ranking in the world, but the core technology of the gel ink pen is still rely on importing so far,which restricts the development of gel ink pen industry in China. China is a big country which making the gel ink pen but not powerful. Therefore, the localization of the gel ink pen has a very important practical significance.The paper was reviewed that the the definition and development of the gel ink pen and the gel ink, product superiority of the gel ink pen, the structure and writing principle of the gel ink pen, the composition of the gel ink pen and technical background of the gel ink pen. To improve the stability of the ink, The dye is the colorant in this paper, Acrylic emulsion has good film-forming properties, So acrylic emulsion is selected to improve the water resistance of the gel ink.Viscosity and thixotropy which belonging to the rheological properties of the gel ink are the key technologies of the gel ink development, The thickener can significantly affect the rheological properties of the gel ink, Xanthan gum is the representative of the the inorganic thickener and TT-935which is the representative of the alkali-swellable acrylic thickener are selected in the paper, Through the determination of the thixotropic index, apparent viscosity made a determination in the ink, the effect of various thickeners of gel ink on thixotropic was evaluated. The results show that, Xanthan gum and TT-935have no effect on the stability of the gel ink, And the viscosity of the ink increases with the the content of the thickener, Both Xanthan gum and TT-935have certain thixotropy, But when comparing with each other, Xanthan gum has better thickening and thixotropy, Therefore, the content of Xanthan gum was optimized.The effect of various humectant of gel ink on ink viscosity, moisturizing time and thixotropic was reviewed in the paper. The content of the humectant of gel ink was optimized. The best formulation of gel ink is shown in Table1. Physical properties and writing performance of the homemade gel ink were tested in the paper, and both physical properties and writing performance of the homemade gel ink achieve the performance index of the gel ink.
