In this study, the radius of the log contour was detected based on laser triangulation method, and log3D digital figure was constructed with software. Using a laser displacement sensor to detect log contour information.The purpose is exploring a low-cost, suitable for promoting detection system. The system includes hardware and software systems. The hardware system includes testing equipment, motion control equipment and data conversion equipment. The software system includes data acquisition software, stepper motor control software, data storage software and reconstruction software.The conclusions of study are listed as follows:(1) One laser displacement sensor was used to collect the data of11sections of log. Practical systems generally use4-5laser sensor and can only collect4-5sections data. From the cost, the system can save30000—40000RMB assuming10000RMB each one. Detection efficiency and system cost are susceptible to accept for small and medium-sized enterprises.(2) Laser displacement sensor is selected as detection device, motion control card, servo motor, stepper motor and drives are selected as control and drive device, A/D converter is selected as data conversion device, to construct the whole system. Radius and length calibration showed that the detection accuracy can meet the log centering requirement.(3) The swing angle of the laser displacement sensor and rotating angle of log were decided through analysis and calculation. The collected data was verified with a PVC pipe, and the result indicated that the accuracy can meet the requirement.(4) The reconstruction software was programmed based on VB language, can be used to zoom, pan, rotate, adjust the four image transform single-ended log3D digital figure.(5) The best centering point and best centering radius were decided through discussing different centering methods based on log3D digital figure.
