As the existing work, dry strengthing agents follow the requirements of good performance, green environmental protection and industrial circular economy in Chinese papermaking. This study focused on the efficient, inexpensive and environmental dry strengthing agent, which was synthesized by soap-free emulsion polymerization technology. The three kinds of dry strengthing agents were modified by cationic-etherified PVA and different functional monomers. To investigate the influence of functional monomer, cationic etherifying agent, cationic monomer and initiator on emulsion performance and physical properties of paper. The dry strengthing agents were synthesized with styrene, butyl acrylate, acrylamide as the basic monomers, polyvinyl alcohol as the polymer dispersant, methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as cationic monomer and2,3-epoxy-propyl-trimethyl-ammonium chloride as cationic etherifying agent. Furthermore, this article adopted potassium peroxy-disulfate and sodium bisulfile as compound initiator. The PGSBG, PGSBM and PGSBH were respectively synthesized by using glycidyl methacrylate, hydroxy-propyl methacrylate maleic anhydride as functional monomer. First, the chemical composition and morphology of emulsion were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra and transmission electron microscopy respectively. Then the images of modified and virgin fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. And images of modified and virgin fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Then, the dry strength additives were added into paper, and figured out their physical proper. The optimum reaction condition was that PVA:AM:BA:St=1:3:2:2(quality ratio). In order to obtain relative stable dispersion system and good physical performance, the dosage of GTMAC, DMC and initiator were1.5wt%,1.5wt%and0.3wt%based on whole monomers. When the amount of GTMAC, HPMA and DMC were2.5wt%,1.5~2.0wt%and1.5wt%of whole monomers respectively, the papers possessed relative excellent physical properties. The results showed that emulsion particles formed successfully, which possessed excellent stability properties and monodispersion. According to the SEM analysis, the paper fibers without adding strength emulsion were loose. While the fibers which with adding emulsion were compactly arranged. Combined paper physical properties with economic feasibility, the dosage of PGSBG, PGSBH and PGSBM was0.8%,1.2%and1.6%respectively to achieve more ideal effect.
