Shanwei power plant is located in the Baisha Lake which is west to the Shigongliao pennisula, west in Jieshi Bay, and north to the Zhelang Town in Shanwei City, Guangdong province. The port works consist of two phases. For Phase I, a 70,000DWT coal berth (structure for 150,000DWT vessels), a 3,000DWT service berth and a 1,000DWT oil berth are to be constructed. And for Phase II, another 70,000DWT coal berth and dredging of approach channel and basin for navigation of 150,000DWT vessels are to be constructed. The site of the plant was selected to be the Baisha lake site. For this site, the basin of the port is considered to be a rectangular digged-in small basin, which is to be formed by removal of the sand barrier between the Baisha Lake peninsula and the land. All the berths are to be aligned alongside. To prevent waves and siltation, two breakwaters are proposed.Rectangular small basin is rare in practices of world ports. It is also doubted by Chinese experts for its potential wave converging problems. In the early phase of the project, the wave problem has been a sensitive issue for a long time. Since the channel and sand barrier arranging perpendicular to the coast, the siltation and navigation will not be the problem, hence the key is the wave conditions inside the basin.Considering that the channel may diffract the waves and the deepening of the channel may help to absorb the wave energy, in this article, the study data of wave physical modeling are analyzed and the effect on the wave propagation by the alignment of the channel are studied. And the wave conditions inside the basin and its limits for berthing are analyzed. The reasonability and feasibility of the rectangular small basin are discussed and some recommendation on the improvement are hence presented. It is also verified through the operation status on completion of the project that, the option of a small port basin is feasible and might be a new and employable option for similar projects.
