Modular design, a key technology of Mass Customization and AgileManufacturing, has shorten the design cycle and given priority to customer.Mechanical products differ in versitility and particularity, many problems exist indeciding the complexity of the process of modular design. In this paper, bucketelevators are investigated as an object of study, and key technologies are discussed inmodular design of large complex product, which including module segmentation, module matter-element model, module retrieval and modular product cost budget. In this paper, based on the analysis of the function characteristics and structurecharacteristics of the bucket elevators, the correlative model of user quantizationparameters and bucket elevators structure components is created, and bucket elevatorsmodule segmentation is finished based on relational model, then, modulematter-element model of extension-based theory is created; The interval distance isused for realizing modular retrieval for complex products and customers’ individualneeds, which is redefined based on point distance. This algorithm is intended toimprove the retrieval efficiency to pay more attention to attributes matching coverage;Module cost buget are built based on extension transformation. Finally, based onVisual Studio2005client platform system with access database server, we haveestablished bucket elevators extension modular prototype system, which has realizedmajor functional modules including bucket elevators equipment selection, moduleretrieval and so on. The frameworks of the design system are proved to be feasible. The system helps to realize the rapid product design and intelligent design of bucketelevators, and present a new way to develop bucket elevators in the future. This research isn’t only applied to bucket elevators modular design but alsosupport the modular design for other large and complex mechanical products undercomplex customer needs, which will provide a theoretical basis and practical solutions.
