The main contents of dissertation are as following:1. The traditional and modern products design methods are first discussed in this chapter. Then the key function of variant design methods and modular technology under the mass customization are analyzed with a systematically overview of current theories as well as methods of variant design and research situation of modular technology.2. The general process of product designing is briefly reviewed at the beginning. A variant design method based on modular technology is then introduced from three aspects, including the structural model of modular products,planning for product family of modular matrix and the paths variant design. Based on the theoretical literature review above, a general process in modular variant designing is presented and the enabler of both the product model and the functional structure of the modular variant design system are developed.3. The planning process of a module system is discussed in two aspects: the dividing methodology of one functional module and module synthesis techniques. Then by focusing on one modular variant design unit, the dissertation analyzes the variant design process and presents the modular management technique.4. The implementation of CBR technology and product tree structure is reported applying to modular product design. A subsystem of the products parameter system based on Pro/Toolkit is developed.5. A CAD system for variant product design is proposed and successfully implemented in the design process of a screw pump.
