Effect Of Highway Speed Limit Facilities On Operation And Fuel Efficiency

Speed is a very important factor in road traffic safety, thus it is very critical tolimit the vehicle speed,.All of the highway set a variety of speed limits facilities, thathas greatly improved road traffic safety, but they also affect the efficiency of vehicleoperation and fuel.The impact of the speed limit facilities on the system operating efficiency, canbe measured by the total delay of system. The total delay caused by several factors, inwhich the vehicle speed make the most significant impact. Therefore, here using therunning time that vehicles travel through the same sections at the actual speed(existing of the facilities of the speed limit) and the predicted speed (assuming nofacilities of the speed limit) to study its effects.The fuel efficiency is decided by the fuel consumption when vehicles through asection. In this paper, using a comparison of the amount of fuel consumed by thevehicle at the actual and projected speed through the same sections, to determine thedegree of influence of the speed limit facilities.This article first analyzes the type of the highway speed limit facility, andconducts field research and data collection, getting road information and the actualspeed of vehicles through the different sections of the speed limit facilities. And thenapply the speed prediction model to calculate the prediction speed of vehiclesassuming there are no speed limit facilities. Through the comparison to differentmethods, deciding using the vehicle micro-simulation software--TruckSim to carryon the simulation experiments, and finally obtain the run time and fuel consumptionwhen the vehicles go through the same sections at the actual and the forecast speed,quantitativly expounding the negative impact of limit facilities to operating efficiencyand fuel efficiency.
