Conventional helicopter has many disadvantages, it is necessary to research new concepthelicopter. The aerodynamic performance of helicopter rotor is a critical technology in developmentof the new helicopter technology and its research is significant. In this thesis, for a new side-by-side helicopter with two advancing blade concept (ABC) rotors, its advantages have been described, including the methods of flight control. The preliminary designand flight performance of the side-by-side helicopter have also been completed. On the basis ofpreliminary design, the aerodynamic performance of helicopter rotor was analyzed. In this thesis, the prescribed wake model of helicopter in hover and forward flight has beendeveloped based on Weissinger-L lifting surface model. In hover, the wake model established byKocurek and Tangler was used to calculate the aerodynamic performance of helicopter rotor, including the distribution of circulation, induced velocity and the load of blade section, besides, thethrust, power and Figure of Merit of the rotor have also been calculated, the comparisons between thecase studied and experimental data verified the developed model. In forward flight, blade airloads, flight power of H-34and S-76helicopter were calculated using the wake model established by Egolfand Landgrebe. The comparisons between the numerical results and the experimental data verified thedeveloped model. At last, the aerodynamic performance of the side-by-side helicopter rotor was calculatedconsidering the aerodynamic influence of two rotors, and comparisons have been made between theside-by-side helicopter rotor and the single rotor with the same parameters. The study shows theperformance of the former is better, and the aerodynamic performance of the side-by-side helicopter issatisfactory. Finally, the effects of number of blades, linear blade twist and blade tip speed on thehover and forward aerodynamic perform were calculated.
