A Research On The Rebuilding And Reuse Of Old Industrial Buildings For Sustainable Development

The subject to be studied in the paper focuses on large numbers of idle or disusedold industrial buildings emerged due to economic restructuring, rapid urbandevelopment and various other reasons. Removal or new construction of old industrialareas and industrial buildings has a great influence on the environment and features withunique design philosophy, historical, cultural and aesthetic values, thus becoming animportant type during the transformation and re-use process of old buildings. Study onmodes and approaches of transformation and re-use of these buildings has not onlypractical significance but also specific characteristics. It conforms to the concept ofsustainable development and is also an important part and research subject of futureurban construction.This paper takes the historical development, theoretical basis and practices offoreign and domestic old industrial transformation and re-use, especially the case oftransformation and re-use of east campus of Xi’an University of Architecture andTechnology as the key content of study. By virtue of successful experiences in foreigntransformation and re-use of old industrial buildings and combining with the actualstatus, present difficulties and problems of old industrial transformation and re-use juststarted in China, the paper looks ahead, analyzes and discusses adaptive strategies ofdesign theoretical basis and project implementation approaches and others oftransformation and re-use scheme of old industrial buildings.The aim and significance of the study is trying to find a transformation and re-useapproach of old industrial buildings conforming to China’s actual conditions andconcepts of sustainable development, hoping to provide useful reference and inspirationfor transformation and re-use of old industrial buildings.
