The21st century is the era of the city. With increasing urbanization, the functions ofbicycle transportation are also evolving. On the one hand, due to the continuous urbansprawl, the average trip distance exceeds the preponderant distance of a bike. Therefore, the bicycle is no longer the dominant urban transportation. On the otherhand, with the urban problems such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, noise pollution being more and more serious; the significance of the bicycletransportation on ecology and leisure draws the attention of the public."GreenCycling" has become a new way of leisure activities for urban residents. However, inthe construction of urban green space system, the concern over bikeways is stillrelatively inadequate. Especially in the green wedge, which plays important role inconnecting the rural and urban green space, to build a bikeways system is highlysignificant. In this paper, the northwest green wedge of Beijing is selected as the research objectto study the planning and design models of bikeways system. Firstly, the relationshipbetween the bikeways system and the green wedge is further discussed. Based on that, the planning and design of bikeways system is discussed from four aspects: overalland piecewise selection model of the bike path, service facilities set and classificationnode mode. Based on the history research of the northwest green wedge, theconnections of water system, traffic and culture were found, which were erodedcontinually with the continuous expansion of city size. So connecting historic sitesand recasting the cultural chain between old city and western suburbs become thebasis for overall path design. On this basis, combining with the characteristics ofcircling urban, the possible mode of spatial relation between bicycle paths design andvarious resources was discussed. And the relatively appropriate path mode wasdecided based on the comparison and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages ofdifferent mode. Then, the rational setting of services in the bicycle path system wasdiscussed, and the facility planning that covered type, distribution and number waspresented based on existing research and practices. Finally, based on thesuperposition of the above studies, the detailed design of major nodes was performedin this paper. In this paper, the typical green wedge in the northwest of Beijing was chosen as theresearch object, the planning and design of bicycle path were discussed and theconclusions can be used for the planning and design of bicycle path in the greencorridor.
