Along with the exposed worse problem of the stereotyped international styleof"Urbanization", the worldwide identification of architecture is fading, thus makingpeople reflect on buildings and regional culture. Along with the development of modernscience and technology, the anti-cold architectural design of regionalism andarchitectural practice are being developed, perfected and gradually becomes a modernmeaningful theoretical research topic. In the regional architectural design, materialselection will undoubtedly become the fundamental expressive factor and basic symbol,reflecting the local history and culture; we can say that from the birth of buildings,material has been an indispensible design element of architecture. Wood, as one of thebasic building materials, appearing with the identity of typical part in design materials,entirely rely on its own excellent natural qualities, thus getting a long history, especiallyin China wooden buildings have become the main oriental architecture culturaltechniques. The reason that wood can gain its popularity in vast China has natural andinseparable connection with its regionalism. The southwest area of China, especiallySichuan and Chongqing (later referred as Chuanyu), are representatives of Bashu culture,forming relatively unique wooden building style and outlook under the influence of itsgeographical environment, folklore, and culture. However, in modern times the study ofwooden buildings in Sichuan and Chongqing is a blank and disconnection. Nowadaysalong with the advocating regional humanistic design, green buildings and wood being acombination of natural skill and art, researching the expressive force of wood inChuanyu regional architectural design and studying the design techniques as well asapplication strategies of Chuanyu regional architecture have its necessity, urgency,profound research meaning and practical significance. This paper, through systematicstudy of the traditional Chuanyu wood building system, after research and on-siteinterviewing of the wooden building constructions in Chuanyu regions, together with thecollecting, summarizing and analyzing the typical cases of regional architectural designboth home and abroad, draws the appropriate conclusions. This paper effectivelydiscusses the Chuanyu historical and cultural inheritance, the protection of traditionalarchitectural skills and the creation of new aesthetics and new technology and aims tocontribute to the future development of wooden buildings in Chuanyu areas.There are six chapters in this paper.Chapter1(Raising questions): Putting forward the research background and the relevant aspects, defining the concepts of the "Chuanyu" region and "wooden buildings",summarizing the research condition and development trends both home and abroad,deciding the research purpose, significance and research methods and framework.Chapter2(Moving into the subject): This part mainly summarizes and analyzes theregional background of Chuanyu wooden buildings, combined with research results andanalysis from "the natural, geographical and cultural characteristics of Chuanyuregions","the development, types, characteristics, spatial form and creation skills",achieving systematical understanding the geographical styles and reasons of formingtraditional Chuanyu wooden buildings,Chapter3(Core contents): Mainly research the expressive strategies of Chuanyuwooden architectural creation. This part is developed from the following five aspects:the research and refining of wooden materials, the resonance of continuationof Chuanyu regional culture; the co-prosperity of adaptation and fusion of Chuanyu regional environment and the artistic understanding of the combination between timber and other materialsChapter4(Core contents): This chapter mainly studies the technique optimizationof Chuanyu wooden architecture，proposes to use the new characteristics of modernwooden architecture and industrial development achievement. Based oncomputer-assistance and regional aesthetics, the paper proposes to modernize theChuanyu wooden architectural technology in order to inherit, protect and innovateChuanyu wooden architecture.Chapter5(Summary)： To draw experiences concerning Chuanyu woodenarchitecture， the paper proposes to inherit the traditional culture plus history ofChuanyu wooden architecture， protect and renew the traditional techniques ofChuanyu wooden architecture. Another proposal offered in this paper is to create newChuanyu wooden architecture style combined with modern new aesthetics. Then thepaper summarizes the future trend of wooden architecture in Chuanyu and whole China.Five basic principles follow are presented afterward.Chapter6(Prospects): The conclusion part advocates to unremittingly explore theemerging road to Chuanyu wooden architecture, inherit, protect, innovate Chuanyuarchitecture, design and construct wooden architecture with Chuanyu culturalcharacteristics.
