In recent years, with the accelerated pace of China’s economic construction and urbanization, gathering of cities and the radiation effect become more and more obvious and people travel more frequently. The precise transport time, convenience, and security have become increasingly demanding, and urban rail transport has played a pivotal role in easing the road traffic pressure. However, in the central areas and business areas of major cities which have a more concentrated population, the transport capacity of traditional urban rail transport has been saturated, which is striking with the residents’ growing demand for travel. The contradictions embodies in that the increasing of trains is limited. And if the train is in overload operation, the quality of service will be declined. The passengers are crowding with each other will force the train to stop prolonged, which affect the traffic order and reduce the transport efficiency during peak hours.Since80s, countries have already started studying at new urban rail transit systems which can meet the higher quality of transport. Fully automatic operation system came into being in this context and showed its superiority. At present, relevant research in the field is not perfect. In order to determine the reasonableness of project planning and promote China’s urban rail transport to the international standards, we need to do in-depth analysis and research on the methods of capacity and analysis of the capacity of fully automatic operation system.This paper introduced the general concept of capacity and its main influencing factors, summarized by the calculations of ability at home and abroad, summed up the calculation formula of the parallel double line train timetable, and focused on analyzing timetable compression method proposed in the UIC406framework. On this basis, this paper analyzed the operational scenarios, influencing factors and various aspects of the calculation methods of fully automatic operation system. And then discussed the relationship between the train timetable and capacity of the system, proposed the concept of full-table map capabilities of fully automatic operation system, and proposed the method of calculating the capacity by the simulation of train timetable with computer. This paper also made a mathematical model, constraints and objective function and realized the computer-aided tools which can analyse the capacity using schedule compression. At last, this paper made a preliminary calculation of the capacity of fully automatic operation system basing the experimental data, made analysis and discussion of the results. And the further research to be done is given at the end of this paper.The research work and results given in this paper have some theoretical significance, which are based on the calculation of the capacity of fully automatic operation system and the analysis of operation modes. However, the method of research in this paper is just an exploration. Whether the model is reasonable and whether the value of the parameter can reflect the actual situation is all worth discussing in-depth and studying follow-up.
