Through several years’research and effort, modern bamboo structure housings as a new environmental-friendly and energy-saving building, getting more attention from people at home and abroad. However, due to the common sense that people make fire from burning wood and the deviation of fire protection concept, there are general suspects about the fire safety of the building, and it will be a barrier to the development of modern bamboo structure in certain extent. Therefore, research on the fire safety performance of the modern bamboo structure buildings become very necessary. In this paper, glubam (glue laminated bamboo) which is the basic material of the modern bamboo structure buildings and full-scale bamboo room unit was studied by means of experiments and numerical simulation to understand the basic fire safety performance of the structure.Firstly, the combustibility of glubam which is treated by G60-95 flame-retardant paint was test at Tianjin Fire Research Institute, according to China National standard. During the test, index of combustion grow rate, flame lateral spread size, heat release amount and other related parameters were recorded. Based on the test results, the combustibility performance of the glubam was evaluated.Secondly, A fire simulation test of full-scale room unit was carried out to study the fire safety of lightweight bamboo frame buildings. Firewood with its quantity determined based on several international standards was stacked and ignited in the testing room unit. The test was finished after one hour. Temperature history of several points on walls and floor surface, fire behavior of the over-all structure and the damage of the house members were recorded during the test. Fire design measures are suggested for the new bamboo building system on the basis of the experimental results analysis. Finally, numerical simulation was conducted on the full-scale fire test using Fire-driven fluid dynamics software FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) which is developed by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). Numerical results were compared with experimental results and found good agreements between the two. It verified the simulation results. At the same time, HRR (Heat Release Rate) history was recorded during the simulation, along with the research methods of fire safety science, will provide a more convenient and reasonable fire model in the further experiments and numerical analysis.
