As aircraft’s standby power, aeronautical lead-acid battery is used for engine start, voltagestability while switching great power equipments. In emergencies, it can also be used as thestandby power to maintain the functions of communication and navigation. It is crucial foraircraft safety.During battery’s charging process of traditional charging method, charging voltage andcurrent can’t be regulated intelligently with the change of season and environmentaltemperature; meanwhile, releasing hydrogen, releasing oxygen, losing water and thermalrunaway often affect battery’s performance and reduce service life seriously.The operational principle of Gill24 aircraft battery and the causes of common breakdownsare analyzed. And also comparison and research on various battery charging methods are doneand the factors such as temperature and polarization that may affect the performance ofbattery charging are detailedly analyzed. Then the measures of alleviating polarization arediscussed, a new charging method is put forward based on the research and automatic controltheory is introduced into the research of the battery charger which adopts TMS320F2812 asthe core. This new method can reduce gassing and thermal runaway while charging, increasemargin of safety, shorten charge time, and prolong the actual life of battery.In the end, contrast experiments for Gill241 lead-acid battery are done based on themethod of intelligent charging and two-stage constant-current charging respectively. Thenthrough the experiment, the advantages of new charging method are demonstrated: shortcharging time, weak polarization and less gassing.
