A Study On The Traditional Space Of Wuzhen Ancient Town

Traditional space of ancient town is a result of a long-term interaction between human and nature. It reflects the historical, social, folk life and cultural content of the ancient town. It’s a valuable material and spiritual wealth of human. Wuzhen, as one of the representatives of the ancient towns in the South of Yangtze River, has typical local style with distinctive local characteristics. It is an intangible precious heritage, and also contains a deep history and spiritual connotation. At present, Wuzhen has been included in the Chinese cultural heritage, as well as the Tentative Lists of world cultural heritage.Based on a large collection of relevant information and several field studies, this paper focuses on the traditional space of Wuzhen, using the knowledge of urban planning and landscape architecture design, systematic analysis the space of the traditional ancient town from multi-angle. Firstly, according to historical and current situation, this study combs the formation and evolution process of the Wuzhen ancient town space, mining the change regulation as well as factors affecting the evolution which hidden behind the space appearance. Secondly, macro analysis of the overall pattern of Wuzhen’s space, resolve the substance and the behavior constitute of the traditional space, analysis the law of form, deeply discuss the features of the space creation in Wuzhen. Summary the design concepts and methods from the traditional space, which can be borrowed by modern space environment. Hope to provide a detailed case for the space research of the traditional settlement and a useful reference and inspiration to modern design practice by the studying.
