Planning And Design Of Scenic Byway Roadside Recreation Service Facilities

Scenic Byway is a new type of scenic highway originated from America, which realizes a compromise between transportation and tourism. The prime difference between scenic byway and common road is its recreational function, which is also its cure value. However, realize of recreational function needs the support of its physical foundation, recreational service facilities. Therefore, planning and design of recreational service facilities is a priority of Scenic Byway construction.In recent years, an increase attention has been paid on construction of scenic highway in China.However, the design theory of this kind of road is not muature yet, and the study on planning and design of roadside recreation facilities is little. The development of roadside recreation facilities is a crucial factor for transfor the function of scenic highway from connection to recreation. A deep study on roadside recreation facilities design theory is the demand of scenic highway construction practice.The thesis studies the planning and design of scenic byway roadside recreation facilities on the base of a mount of case of American Scenic Byway recreation facilities design, and takes the advantages of theories on highway design, landscape design, and tourism and recreation design, the main methodology here is Document Research Methord and Case Study. The thesis raises the frame of scenic byway roadside recreation facility innovatively, and studies the design principle and process of scenic byway roadside recreation facility.On the base of that, a case study is delivered on each kind of facilities. It is found that the scenic byway roadside recreation facility can be classified into five types according to their function like wayshowing signs, traffic connection facilities, interpretive service facilities, ourdoor recreation facilities and hospitality facilities.On the one hand, the five types of facilities follow the same principles on the aspect of strengthening scenic byway theme, emphasizing recreational experience, protecting road safty. On the other hand, each type of facilities has its own focal point on design due to the function difference. The thesis take a deep research on the focal point with the cases from America scenic byways.
