With rapid social and economic development and speeding city construction, there are more populations flocking in cities. The traffic matter is getting more attention than before, studying the influence of increasing populations and motor vehicles and the mutual impact between pedestrians and motor vehicles. Recently, the Cellular Automata Theory has been applied into vehicle traffic and pedestrian evacuation. Based on the features of vehicle traffic, pedestrian evacuation and their mutual effects, the thesis constructs the Cellular Automaton Model in which pedestrians and motor vehicles interrupts mutually, probes into value range of optimal green signal ratio, the optimum correlation among multiple traffic lights controlling period, and the influence pedestrians exert on traffic at crossroads.Chapter1introduces several models, the definition and characteristics of cellular automata. At the same time, it reviews the current researches about cellular automata’s application in traffic flow and pedestrian flow. Chapter2is a study about the influence a single zebra crossing has on traffic flow under periodic boundary condition and open boundary condition respectively. It mainly examines the influence from the following aspects:with or without traffic lights, periods, the probability of pedestrian generation, the probability of motor vehicle generation, and the probability of motor vehicle disappearance. There is a comparison about the optimal value of green signal ratio under the conditions with traffic light. Chapter3is a study on two intersections with traffic lights. It explores the effect of period on traffic flow when the green signal ratios are decided and the effect of green signal ratio on traffic flow when the periods are set. After the exploration, it aims to capture the optimum correlation between period and green signal ratio. Combining with actual situations, Chapter4builds a Cellular Automaton Model where pedestrians and motor vehicles interrupt each other. The model is an east-ward lane crossed by a north-ward lane, with zebra crossings designed on each lane. These zebra crossings are located at the nearest left and right neighbors of the intersection, with traffic lights arranged at the third and forth zebra crossings. It examines the influence under the open boundary condition by analogue computation. Factors examined include the existence of traffic lights, periods, the probability of pedestrian generation, the probability of motor vehicle generation, and the probability of motor vehicle disappearance. Meanwhile, there are analyses on the causes of different traffic situations in this chapter. After examination and analyses, the chapter finally defines the value range of optimal green signal ratio.
