With the high-speed development of economy and the accelerated process of urbanization, the transportation problems of our cities become more and more serious. The development of information technology, such as electronics, computer and control theory, provides a new approach to traffic control and management, and the application of embedded systems in intelligent transportation is one of the hot research topics. The intersection is a place where vehicles crowd and evacuate, and reasonable traffic lights time is conducive to the use of road resources and the improvement of road traffic capacity. This thesis focuses on the traffic signal control at intersections. The main works are as follows:First, the current traffic signal control and implementation methods have been surveyed and analyzed; Then the model-free adaptive control algorithm (MFAC) is applied to the control of an intersection, and a traffic light controller based on the ARM processor was designed. Thirdly, the design of the hardware, the operating system and software are studied in details; Finally, the simulation has experimented under laboratory conditions using the practical historical traffic flow data collected from one of a crossing section of Shenzhen. The functions of the controller has been verified by the serial communication of MATLAB, and the analysis of the results confirmed the effectiveness and advantage of the algorithm. The thesis combining the control of intersection with embedded system and MFAC control algorithms through the serial communication of MATLAB and embedded system, provides certain reference for the design and implementation of intelligent intersection control.
