The number of motor vehicles is increasing rapidly with the development of economy and the progress of science and technology. So the traffic congestion problems in urban have appeared, become increasingly prominent, and caused more huger economic loss, which will affect people’s lives. Therefore, it has become an concerned problem for road researchers who come from different countries to study how to deal with the serious traffic jams. In order to reduce or avoid traffic congestion, they should try to find out the effective measures that reduce the traffic demand in traffic peak time and increase capacity on urban road. It can regulate the traffic demand through arranging the intervening on-and off-office, encouraging the development of public transport and limiting the number of private cars. The road capacity can be increased through making better cars and building more roads, but the effect is not very obvious by taking the above measures. Thus, there has been very important significance to study the traffic signal control, especially the study of the area traffic signal control.In this paper, the research object is the traffic signal control at some intersections. The main contents are summarized as follows.1. Through the study and improvement of the car-following models proposed before, the traffic flow simulation model has been established based on the car-following theory.2. Firstly, the strategy of predictive control of traffic signals is put forward based on the research of predictive control mechanism, i.e. forecast model, rolling optimization and real-time feedback. Secondly, according to the research of the area traffic flow, the signal optimal control model is built, and it can be solved to obtain the best signal timing program by using the intelligent genetic optimization algorithm,(i.e., doing the simultaneous optimization for all signal control parameters in area control). Thus, the coordinated control between neighboring intersections ensures the system performance index be optimal. This paper presents detailed steps of modeling and genetic algorithm flow.3. Microscopic traffic simulation model has been established in the end. What’s more, the framework of microscopic traffic simulation and its flow are presented. Simulation programs are coded in vc++6.0developping enviroment, whose primary functions include simulating vehicle operation in the road network, the optimization of traffic signal timing and the implementation of algorithm impletation. With regard to the designed road network having five junctions, the simulation has been done, and the results have been proved that traffic signal control can really increase the traffic capacity with the objective function minimizing the number of vehicles waiting for relase in the traffic area. Through many simulation experiments, the signal predictive control strategy is compared with timing control strategy and sensor control strategy in the same traffic condition. The simulation results have testified the effectiveness of the the traffic signal control based on predictive control proposed in the thesis.Based on the traffic simulation, this paper has basically accomplished the combination of simulation technique and optimization technique, and predictive control and traffic signal control. The anticipated results have been attained. Finally, the future research direction is given.
