A Research On The City Landmarks Based On Semiology

The buildings called landmarks are just like name cards of the city, which can signify the characteristic of the city. Therefore, people can get the deep impression of the city within the shortest possible time. In the daily life, the symbol is used for the cognition of the objects and exchange of the information. For this reason, it is extremely meaningful to introduce Semiology to the landmarks which can help people fully understand the city. By the way, the landmarks can be observed commented and even created in an entire new angle.Based on Semiology, this theis analyzed and studied the design of the landmarks theoretically and methodologically. The thesis was composed of five chapters. Chapter one was the background which presented the research on landmarks both at home and abroad, as well as the content, purpose, significance and the mythology. Chapter two highlighted the theories of Semiology concerned with landmarks. At the same time, the necessity of the introduction of Semiology to the landmarks was also referred. The third and fourth chapters were the core of this paper. Chapter three analyzed the landmarks from syntactics, semantics and pragmatics. The explicate and implicit composition of the landmarks, the communication pattern and the relationship between the landmarks and cognitive subjects were all stated in this chapter. Chapter four included the landmarks’ meaning types as well as the analyzing and extracting of the symbols of city’s heritage. It also introduced the detailed design method of Semiology with the demonstration of quantities of living cases. Chapter five summarized the guiding significance and the issues which needed paying attention to. In the end, the typical principles and outlooks were summarized.The thesis did a analysis and research to the landmarks according to Semiology. Consequently, the valuable gains were listed as follows:Theoretically speaking, first, the research findings were tentatively formed and got the relatively complete theory structure of landmarks’ syntactics, semantics and pragmatics. Second, the relatively complete communication model were gained according to the systematical elaboration on the explicate and implicit composition of the landmarks, the examples, the communication patterns, the meaning forming and creating, the need of the cognitive subjects and the annotation of meanings. Meanwhile, the cognition towards the landmarks became more familiar to the people.Practically speaking, this thesis summarized the types of landmarks’ subjects in detail. It also analyzed and extracted the symbols of city’s heritage. On the whole, it elaborated the methodology of the application of Semiology on the landmarks, making the design method which based on Semiology serve as a guide in the buildings’ designing.
