The word "Square" is widely used in our daily life. The term can often be heard as " speech square " , " citizen's square " , " shopping square " , " government's square " ,etc., but its meaning has sizable differences . Referring to open space in the city, " square" has no definite definition in the language. Can " square " be regarded as an opened space in the city? What similarities and differences are there between "square "," park" and "green land"? What is the meaning of " square " in the city? A great number of squares are under construction, of all kinds and different scales, and the meaning of city square space environment that it is attempted to give by the designers is how heavy degree to realize? Or the designers are destroying or interrupting the environmental continuity? This essay main investigate in: Aiming at the city square space environment, using the general theories of Cognitive psychology and Semiology, we make a location to the language cognitive meaning of city square space environment at first, and then from real example of cognition of square in the investigation (taking Wuhan city hongshan square, shouyi square as the example), probe into the meaning of the square space user in the city, and to have impact on the designer, then exert an influence on the design method. Meanwhile, it is a kind of normal form that it reverses from building-up-environment to assess to design method.
