Under the background of adjustment for the energy structure, with the power system’s requests for safety, efficiency and stability increasing, the development of China’s power grid entered a new stage—smart power grid. The smart power grid is a combination of advanced technologies, which includes power electronic technology, information technology, energy storage technologies, sensor measurement technology etc, among these technologies,energy storage technology is a key point, which play an important role in the construction of smart power grid as followed:1)for power peak shaving, to solve electricity shortage;2)for power system stability controlling, to raise grid security;3)for user side, to improve the quality and reliability of power supply;4) for optimization of renewable energy, to promote its development and applications.The application of energy storage technology is equivalent in the power system to adding a link connecting the power generation and electricity load as a power "saving" function, which to a degree decouple and buffer the power generation and electricity load, so the power system can be significantly improved in power quality, stability and reliable operation etc, and the operation of power systems can be well optimized. As to technical aspect, by controlling the power switching device, it is possible for energy storage system and large power gird to exchange high-capacity active/reactive power quickly, balancing the power generation and electricity load, at the same time, the voltage and frequency can be effectively assured to improve power supply reliability and power quality, reduce or avoid the loss caused by the problem of network reliability and power quality, meet the user’s high-standard power demand; In addition, energy storage technology can also help the system with restart and rapid recovery after accidents, enhance the system’s self-healing capability.According to national conditions, the first task of power system is to meet the fast growing electrical energy demand, so we need to focus more on long-distance transmission of smart power grids, the use of new energy resources, and energy storage technology. Currently, power storage technology is developing fast ahead to high efficiency of conversion, high density of storing energy and low cost of applications, a variety of new storage technologies have showed a promising future. Based on the above, the specific contents and works of this paper are as followed: 1) Analyze and study several main ways of storage technology, then expound whose energy storage principles and practical applications as well as advantages and disadvantages of application status;2) Analyze and introduce the status on power systems in China, the concept and connotation of the future smart power grid, and combined with the development of smart power grid, study the application and developing direction of energy storage technology;3) Introduce the structure of battery energy storage system, give a mathematical model of battery energy storage system, and study the design of the power converter’s controlling strategy, then combined with the development of wind power in China, give a research and analysis of battery energy storage system in its application and effect, and give a prospect of follow-up questions in the development of energy storage technology.
