In recent years, the construction scale of highway tunnel in China is increasing day by day. Meanwhile, the investigation results indicate that a considerable proportion of tunnels have damage problems with different degree. Tunnel damage threatens driving safety, has influence on traffic quality and shortens the maintenance period and service life of tunnel. Therefore it is quietly important to study the structural safety and damage renovation technology of operating highway tunnel. In view of this, with theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field detection, we have made a thorough study on the concrete features of highway tunnel damage, rely on the Sangzhouling tunnel in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. The main work and research results are as follows:(1) Systematically summarize the main causes of operating highway tunnel damage. And referenced the field detection data of tunnel, visually classify the operating highway tunnel damage. With a large of pictures and relevant literal description, show the concrete forms of various tunnel damage under the former internal and external reasons.(2) Starting from the basic concept of tunnel mechanics, establish the insufficient lining thickness defect models of operating highway tunnel, which is based on load structure method. By numerical simulation, analyze the variation law of lining structure internal force and safety factor when the position, degree and width of the insufficient lining thickness defect vary.(3) Based on load structure method, establish the cavity defect behind the lining models of operating highway tunnel. By numerical simulation, analyze the variation law of lining structure internal force and safety factor when the position, lateral pressure coefficient and range of the cavities behind the lining defect vary.(4) Basing on the preceding analysis, this paper put forward to the corresponding damage renovation measures and construction technology by binding the field detection and evaluation of Sangzhouling tunnel damage and considering the economic and technological factors. The proposed regulation measures will soon applied to the maintenance and reinforcement project of Sangzhouling tunnel, provide more experience and reference for similar maintenance and reinforcement project of highway tunnel.
