The Analysis On The Form Expression Of Contemporary Structural Skin

Building skin is an inevitable issue in the architectural design. Also, undoubtedly, an expressive skin which combining the architectural form and the building structural elements is one of the most popular architectural language. Skin is no longer simply seen as a design of the position of windows or the patter of the facade. Nowadays, in many buildings, the skin is the structure, with no any other decoration.The form and the composition of an building skin is not only based on the consideration of the structural engineering. They are generated on the basis of the collaboration, directed by architects, of architects and engineers.Focusing on this tendency, this paper first makes clear of the developing relationship between the structure and the skin. Then, it develops the research from two aspects, the material and the structure. Finally, the paper makes a conclusion on the formal characters and the design strategy of the structural skin.Following are the main parts of this paper:Cheaper Ⅰ describes the phenomenon and the research subject, angle, area and methods.Chapter Ⅱ introduces the evolution of the relationship between the structure and the skin. Through the analysis on the building structure and the wall structure, this chapter concludes the technical and aesthetical factor of this evolution.Chapter Ⅲ unscrambles the logic of the material and strode in the development of architectural skin. Also, this chapter deeply discusses the technical factors in the skin.Chapter Ⅳ analyzes the formal expression of the structural skin and describes architects’design strategies for this type of architectural skin.
