The semi-trailer has become an important part of the transport market, the frame is the component of semi-trailer that connects every assembly, has the most complex structure and loading, and it is also the design core of semi-trailer. Because the working environment of semi-trailer is varied, the performance requirement of semi-trailer is also very different. Therefore, in order to meet the personalized demand of users, the rapid customization development of semi-trailer has become the inevitable trend, and the design ability of rapid customization for semi-trailer has become an important target of semi-trailer companies’core competitiveness.Most of the current semi-trailer companies’technical level is not advanced, and the excellent talents are few, in order to solve the problems, on the basis of the design characteristic of semi-trailer frame, this paper, through the analysis of loading, puts forward the optimize structure of semi-trailer frame, combines the theory and method of rapid design, and develops the rapid design system of semi-trailer frame based on UG. According to the demands of users, the system can complete the rapid, optimized and lightweight design of semi-trailer frame. The system has great significance in enhancing the enterprises’ability to respond to market rapidly, and improving the core competitiveness of companies. The main research contents are shown as follows:1) This paper analyzes the structural characteristic of semi-trailer frame, and sets up a variety of semi-trailer frames that are three-dimensional models, according to the loading characteristic of semi-trailer frame, through the static analysis and fatigue life analysis, the structural redundancy and weak link of semi-trailer frame are identified, then, the structure and process of semi-trailer frame are optimized, besides, the optimization model are established, and the lightweight design of semi-trailer frame are accomplished.2) In view of the theory and method of rapid design, with the using of modular technology, the semi-trailer frame is divided into many standardized and serialized parts, and the optimized modules are obtained. Then, with regarding UG as the development platform, the modules are designed by the parametric and database technology. For the complex components and parts, the technologies, including relational expression, user defined feature, knowledge engineering, and part family etc, are used in this paper.3) According to the results of our research group, the database of semi-trailer frame, including parameter library, reuse library, and parts library etc, are created. It provides the data support for the rapid design of semi-trailer frame.4) The key components and parts of frame assembly are determined, then, other components and parts are used to match them based on the key components and parts, by achieving the relevant parameter and automatic assembly, and the rapid design system of semi-trailer frame is set up, at last, the function of rapid design system is verified through designing a certain type of semi-trailer frame, and the lightweight and modular design of semi-trailer frame are completed.
