Stirling Engine can make use of air as working medium, and it maintains several great characteristics such as using low calorific value energy, remarkable theoretical heat efficiency, tiny environment contamination and taking low comprehensive cost. Thus, it is simple to maintain and promote concretely. This paper builds a test platform of a small Stirling engine for studying on the relationship between heat source and the performance of the engine. According to the needs of the test platform, an a-type Stirling Engine is designed and manufactured. The coordination problem of piston between sealing and friction is solved by optimizing the transmission mechanism and the selection of sealing. Besides, this paper builds a speed-temperature-time joint measurement device based on virtual instrument technology and MCU technique, and does experiments about the heat input and performance of the engine including:(1) Experiment about relationship between heat input and power: These experiments discuss how to choose the reference point of heater temperature and set the heat input, and analyze the relationship between the heat input and power of the engine.(2) Experiment about effects of the heat input fluctuation on engine performance:This paper obtains characteristics of engine speed response to heat input fluctuation. The result shows that this engine can be stably operated between600r/min and1400r/min, and the friction of the mechanical system is stable. After the discussion of the affection of resonance, this paper puts forward the methods to avoid or reduce this affection by changing the natural frequency or controlling speed. The development and experiment method of the physical prototype introduced in this paper offers the precious reference for future Stirling engine experimental study.
