The fuel cost is an important part of the ship’s running costs, therefore, it is of great significance for the shipping enterprises to reduce the ships’ fuel consumption effectively.As one of the effective ways of the ship energy saving control, slow steaming draws more and more attention to the shipping enterprises. The traditional slow steaming is mainly based on theoretical derivation which offering a best energy saving ship speed. In fact, there is a balance between the main engine rotation, ship speed and fuel consumption for a ship. Due to the specificity of the water transportation, this balance could not be such easy inferred by a simple formula.The paper has designed the marine diesel engine energy saving control equipment by the research based on the ship minimum fuel consumption per unit distance. The equipment could test the fuel consumption per unit distance on real-time and enable the ship run at the minimum fuel consumption per unit distance of the best energy saving working condition by automatic control or manual operation which could avoid theoretical derivation by graphs, load and sea conditions etc., and provide a new idea and direction for the ship energy saving control.The following works have been done:(1) The research on ship speed control method has been done based on the theory of ship resistance and propeller efficiency, and the optimization control model is verified by the laboratory design simulation platform and the automatic optimization control program has been designed as well.(2) The hardware and software of the main control unit, signal acquisition and processing unit and telegraph signal switch and control unit of the marine diesel engine energy saving control equipment system are designed.(3) Two voyages’energy saving tests from Xinshan Port, Machong, Dongguan to Gaoming power plant, Foshan for the marine diesel engine energy saving control equipment on the "No.129East Transportation" as well as the test data analysis report is done, the result indicates that after the optimizing operations, fuel saving rate is41.79%in the full load experimental test and empty load experimental test is32.31%. Although many factors affecting energy saving effect of the ship will change which would reduce the ship’s fuel-saving effect to a certain extent, the fuel-saving effect of the requested10%is completely achievable after the optimizing operation.
