Fuel consumption rate is an important technical parameter of diesel engine, and one of major indexes for the evaluation of engine performance and economics. Development and design of a fuel consumption meter suitable for high power marine engine is desirable and important for the practical applications.System component, hardware circuit and software design route is introduced and discussed in the present paper. According to the needs of practical engineering, different type of flow meters may be used to measure the fuel consumption rate in fuel pipeline of diesel engine. The fuel consumption rate of diesel engine measured by flow meter is outputted through a transmitter in terms of frequency signal; and sends to Intel 80C196 MCU. Intel 80C196 measures the frequency signal from the transmitter, calculates and displays the measuring time, the amount of fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption rate, and prints the results on the embedded micro-printer to achieve the automatic measurement of engine fuel consumption rate.In the developing procedure, the type of flow meter has been selected, and the arrangement of fuel pipeline and influence factors is analyzed for the fuel consumption rate of diesel engine. A number of measuring methods have been studied to measure the frequency signal from the transmitter, and a new measuring method has been used to improve the measuring accuracy of fuel consumption rate. A few of programming design methods have been made using assembly language, PL/M and C language. The floating point number subroutine is formed, and the treatment of floating point number in assembly language is solved. A serial communication program of 80C196 MCU to PC is developed and a measuring examination program for the fuel consumption meter is developed.
