Two-stage matrix converter (TSMC) as a new and green converter has found successful applications in the AC electric drive. Besides, the AC variable speed control scheme of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with no speed sensor has also been presented for some time. Both of the two technologies can bring great benefits for the AC electric drive. In this paper, a novel adjusting speed scheme is proposed by combining the advantages of the two technologies, whose application ranges can be extended significantly. From the viewpoint of the subject requirements and engineering application, this paper presents an AC adjusting speed system of PMSM drove by TSMC without speed sensor, based on DSP and CPLD, which has completed the prototype developments. The main research contents is as follows:1) The mathematic model of the TSMC has been established, and the space vector modulation (SVM) strategies for the rectifier and inverter of TSMC are introduced in detail, which is also verified by simulation.2) The mathematic model of PMSM has been established first. An improved sliding mode controller (SMC) is presented, after discusses its working principle. Then, a control system of PMSM with no speed sensor is developed and studied based on SMC, which is also analyzed by the simulations.3) The control principle of the adjusting speed system of PMSM without speed sensor based on the TSMC drive has been discussed in detail, such as the system hardware, control and monitoring software. In addition, this section describes the system driving circuits and control circuits. Designed the modular software based on C language and VHDL language.4) A prototype of the TSMC-PMSM control system based on sliding model control was built. To meet system debugging demands, a detailed debugging steps was described and the experimental data curve was demonstrated. The performance meets the prototype requirements. The experimental results show that the system not only can have high performace, but also have robustness to external disturbance. The work in this paper would be good solid foundation to design and develop PMSM electric transmission system with high performance controlled speed and good quality power quality.
